May 2016 outlook

  April was a fairly normal month in the Twin Cities. It was cool at the beginning and end of the month, with several very warm days in between. The average temperature for the month was just six-tenths of a degree above normal. The warmest reading at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was 80 degrees, on April 16. The coldest low temperature was 20 degrees, on April 9.

  Rainfall was .18 inch above normal.

  The May temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a tendency for above normal temperatures over Minnesota and Wisconsin:

 Some cool days are likely in any month, but there is a tendency for the average temperature of May 2016 to be warmer than normal.

  In case you’re wondering, our Twin Cities average high temperature rises from 65 degrees on May 1st to 74 degrees on the 31st.

April 2016 outlook

  We had a very warm March, and our Twin Cities snowfall was less than normal at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The storm that dumped a foot of snow on parts of the south metro on March 23 only delivered 3.7 inches at MSP airport. Our March snowfall total at MSP airport was 5.4 inches, which is about 5 inches below our 30 year March average.

  Temperatures were below normal at MSP airport on only 4 of the 31 days in March. Our average temperature for the month was 8.5 degrees above normal in the Twin Cities, making March 2016 the 5th warmest March in Twin Cities weather records dating back to 1873. The highest reading at MSP airport was 70 degrees on March 8th and March 12th, and the chilliest low temp was 13 degrees on March 2nd.  

  Looking ahead, the April temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a slight tendency for above normal temperatures over about the southwestern half of Minnesota:

  The April outlook shows equal chances of above normal and below normal temperatures for the Twin Cities metro area.

March 2016 outlook

  February was fairly mild this year. Temperatures were below normal at MSP airport on only 7 of the 29 days. Our average temperature for the month was 4 degrees above normal in the Twin Cities. The highest reading at MSP airport was 58 degrees on February 27th, and the chilliest low temp was 6 below zero on the 13th.  12.1 inches of snow were measured at MSP airport, which is about 4.4 inches above normal.

  Looking ahead, the March temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a tendency for above normal temperatures over Minnesota and Wisconsin:

  Some cool days are likely, but there is a tendency for the average temperature of the entire month to be milder than normal.

February 2016 outlook

  We saw a couple of cold stretches in January 2016, but temperatures were above normal at MSP airport on 21 out of 31 days. Our average temperature for the month was 2 degrees above normal in the Twin Cities. The highest reading at MSP airport was 43 degrees on January 30th, and the chilliest low temp was 14 below zero on the 17th.  Only 4.1 inches of snow were measured at MSP airport, which is about 8 inches below normal.

January 2016 outlook

December was another unusually mild month in Minnesota. Temps were warmer than normal on the first 17 days of December at MSP airport, and our average temperature for the month was 10.5 degrees above normal in the Twin Cities. The highest reading at MSP airport was 47 degrees on December 9th and 10th, and the chilliest low temp was 7 degrees on December 31st. It was the third warmest December in Twin Cities history, and 9.5 inches of snow were measured at MSP airport. 

  Looking ahead, the January temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a slight tendency for above normal temperatures over Minnesota and Wisconsin:

The outlook doesn’t mean that every day is expected to be milder than normal…it is the average temp for the entire month that shows a slight tendency to be above normal.

  Our Twin Cities average high temperature changes very little during the month of January. It is 24 degrees on January 1st and 25 degrees on the 31st.
